Luc Marijnissen has established himself as an indispensable player in the defence of KV Mechelen. The 23-year-old Dutchman, who joined from Dender this summer, immediately became a key starter for manager Wouter Vrancken. KV Mechelen currently sits fourteenth in the Jupiler Pro League with just two points from four matches.
The defender from NAC Breda took another step up in his career with his move to KV Mechelen. He is one of five Dutch players, nicknamed 'FC Oranje', currently featuring for the club. Together with another Dutchman, he forms a solid Dutch defensive partnership. Marijnissen himself describes his feeling on the pitch in a unique way. "On the pitch, I am a little boy who wants to make his dad proud," he said. He carries that mentality with him into every match.
Marijnissen's motivation extends beyond the daily league competition. The defender has a clear goal in mind that shapes his play and commitment. "To be on the pitch and hear the Champions League anthem, that's what I dream of," he stated. This ambition stems from a deep-seated desire to perform at the highest level. It's a distant target that gives extra meaning to his development at KV Mechelen. The club itself is currently in a disappointing fourteenth place, ten points behind leaders Charleroi.
The context in which Marijnissen excels is challenging. KV Mechelen has had a difficult start to the 2026-2027 season. After four matchdays, Malinwa are still without a win. Their recent form reads DLDL. The team has scored five goals but has also conceded nine, resulting in a negative goal difference of minus four. The next opportunity for improvement comes quickly. KV Mechelen hosts RSC Anderlecht at home on September 11, 2026. Anderlecht currently sits tenth in the table. It will be an important home match where the defence, with Marijnissen in a leading role, will need to stand firm. The full schedule for the coming period can be found on the fixtures page. The match against Anderlecht offers a prime chance to secure the first league victory of the season and start the climb up the table.
