KV Mechelen have officially completed the signing of midfielder Marco Decherf. The 19-year-old Frenchman joins from French second-tier side USL Dunkerque, putting pen to paper on a contract until the summer of 2030, as the club announced. The acquisition comes at a time when Mechelen find themselves in a disappointing 14th place in the Jupiler Pro League after four matchdays, having collected just two points.

Marco Decherf is a product of the USL Dunkerque youth academy. He progressed through all their youth ranks before eventually making the step up to the first team. He made his debut for Dunkerque's senior side in France's Ligue 2. Notably, the young midfielder made an immediate impact in his first two competitive matches for the club, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

KV Mechelen's technical director Tom Caluwé expressed his satisfaction with the arrival of Decherf. "I am very pleased that we were able to complete this transfer," said Caluwé. He added an assessment of the player: "Marco is a versatile midfielder who combines physical qualities with footballing ability. For those reasons, I am convinced of his added value for our team." The club hopes Decherf can integrate quickly and contribute to an improvement in results.

The timing of the transfer is no coincidence. KV Mechelen have had a difficult start to the season. After four rounds of play, the team sits 14th in the standings with two points. The team is yet to win a match, drawing twice and losing twice, resulting in a recent form string of DLDL. The goal statistics are also concerning, with five scored and nine conceded, a difference of minus four.

Trailing league leaders Charleroi by ten points, the title race is already a distant dream, shifting the focus entirely to reversing the negative trend. The arrival of Decherf is meant to add freshness and quality to the midfield. His physical attributes and versatility could provide an answer to the problems the team has faced so far. The full squad can be viewed on the club's squad page.

The official announcement of the transfer comes just before an important home fixture. KV Mechelen are set to host KVC Westerlo on 5 September, a direct rival currently sitting in 16th place. This match, offers an immediate opportunity to pick up points and escape the lower reaches of the table.

It remains unclear whether Decherf will be available for selection for this encounter, but his presence certainly increases the manager's options. With this move, the club has expressed confidence in its youth development and scouting network by investing in a talented player with growth potential. Marco Decherf has signed a four-season contract with KV Mechelen.
