Over four thousand supporters filled the Achter de Kazerne stadium on Thursday for a special charity match organised by KV Mechelen. The club hosted Ukrainian side FC Karpaty Lviv in a gala friendly to raise funds for a centre in Lviv supporting survivors of captivity and torture.
The match, played during the international break, aimed to raise between 30,000 and 40,000 euros. Lviv is Mechelen's sister city, and the bond between the two was palpable in the stands. Fans from both clubs mixed together, creating what attendee Tara called a fine atmosphere. She said it was ideal to bring children to the stadium for such a good cause.
Solidarity
The encounter was about more than football. A new aid convoy is scheduled to depart from Mechelen to Lviv on Monday, carrying bulletproof vests, emergency generators, and over 21,000 medical supplies. Initiator and KV Mechelen stalwart Piet den Boer highlighted the personal connection. "The encounters there were impressive. My father was also in a concentration camp, so I feel connected to the misery of war," he said.
Karpaty coach Fran Fernández outlined the stark contrast with football in Ukraine. There, matches are stopped when air raid sirens sound, and players and fans go to shelters. The allowed stadium capacity depends on available shelter space. "We have been playing under these conditions for four years," Fernández explained.
The Match
The friendly ended in a 3-2 defeat for KV Mechelen. The Ukrainian visitors took the lead through J. Sery in the 25th minute. After the break, B. Boersma equalised for the hosts in the 54th minute. Karpaty Lviv scored again through D. Miroshnichenko (70'), with M. Van Brederode (71') immediately pulling one back. Y. Kostenko sealed the 3-2 win for the guests in the 77th minute.
For supporter Glenn, the result was secondary. "A draw would be nice," he had said beforehand, referencing the evening's symbolism. Ukrainian fan Roman, who travelled from Amsterdam, hoped for a Karpaty win and was happy with the initiative.
Context and Look Ahead
The friendly took place during a tough start to the league season for KV Mechelen. The team sits 18th in the Jupiler Pro League with just three points from seven games, having scored five goals and conceded fourteen. Their next league fixture is at home against STVV, who are currently 11th, on Saturday. The full schedule and current league table can be found on our standings and fixtures pages. The KV Mechelen squad, which wore green and white kits on Thursday, now prepares for that important home match.
