KV Mechelen is under financial pressure and must sell players to keep the club healthy. That's according to sporting director Tom Caluwé, who highlights the difficult balance between development and revenue.

The club, currently sitting 18th in the Jupiler Pro League with three points from seven games, is not yet where it wants to be. "We are by no means where we want to be, and once you have achieved successes, you want to repeat them," said Caluwé. He referenced last season's qualification for Play-off 1, which increased interest in Malinwa's players.

Financial reality

That growing attention brings constant tension. "Every young player in our starting lineup is being watched." the sporting director explained. This speculation affects the players' mental state and the team, partly explaining the poor season start. The club gathered only three points from its first seven competitive matches, an average of 0.43 points per game. Recent form includes three losses and a draw in the last four league matches.

The summer transfer window was consequently difficult. Kerim Mrabti and Mory Konaté departed, while Dennis Praet and Mike Eerdhuijzen arrived as replacements. Praet missed part of pre-season and is now gradually reaching full fitness. Despite the challenges, Caluwé believes the squad is now balanced enough to continue building on the three-defender system.

New signings

Alongside Praet and Eerdhuijzen, Simion Michez, Decherf, Malcolm Lohunanu-Mbasi and Adeshina Ayodele also joined the club. Ayodele unfortunately suffered an injury. For the flanks, Caluwé sees sufficient options in Cédric Van Meirvenne, Michez, Thérence Koudou and Bill Antonio.

The immediate future offers a chance for recovery. The next match is a home game against St. Truiden on October 10. The opponent currently sits eleventh in the table. The full standings provide a clear picture of the catch-up race facing KV Mechelen.
