Result and Initial Impressions
KV Mechelen lost 0‑4 to Charleroi in the second away match of the season. The team had come off a 2‑0 defeat at AA Gent and a 3‑3 draw against Standard, but failed to score any goal. The visitors were unable to create any real danger in Charleroi.
Team Analysis
After the match, coach Frederik Vanderbiest explained: “We started solidly from our organization, but we moved too quickly off the plan. Instead of staying compact in a midfield block, we pushed forward too often, creating too much space. Charleroi exploited that.”
He added: “What bothered me most was our ball quality. We brought far too little, especially considering how well the same team performed against Standard last week.”
Mindset and Tactics
“After the break we tried to play more compactly and force a bit with substitutions. Just when we seemed to be improving, the 2‑0 fell,” said Vanderbiest. “It isn’t about mentality or effort; those were there. Charleroi simply brought more intensity and we never managed to turn the game. With one point from nine, the start is too weak and we must quickly analyse how to fix this.”
Next Challenge
On matchday four, a trip to La Louvière follows. KV Mechelen will have to tap the Wolves from a different vat.
