KV Mechelen must restart its search for a central defender after the planned transfer of Matía Barzic from Elche CF collapsed at the last minute. The Croatian defender, who was set to travel to Belgium on Tuesday, decided after a conversation with Elche’s new coach to pursue his chances in Spain’s Primera División.

What happened?

According to Spanish sources, the deal between KV Mechelen and Elche CF was finalized on Monday evening. Barzic was supposed to travel to Belgium on Tuesday, but after a conversation with Argentine coach Anselmi, the situation changed. The coach convinced the 21-year-old Croatian to stay and fight for a starting spot in Spain. A contract extension at Elche now seems likely.

Why does this matter for KV Mechelen?

This is a major setback for KV Mechelen. Barzic was meant to replace Redouane Halhal, who left for Venezia for around five million euros. The team lost 2-0 to KAA Gent on Sunday and saw Gora Diouf injured. Massimo Decoene had to step in at center-back, but defensively, Malinwa looked unstable in Gent.

What’s next?

KV Mechelen must now re-enter the transfer market. Last season, the club finished sixth in the Jupiler Pro League with 24 points from 32 matches (12W-10D-10L). With a goal difference of 40-39 (+1) and 15 points behind leaders Union St. Gilloise, defensive reinforcement is crucial. The next match is on November 28 away against Cercle Brugge.
